Getting to Know Floor Scrubbers

Getting to Know Floor Scrubbers

There are more floor cleaning machines on the market today than ever before. Choosing the right one will depend on a number of factors, including your budget, the size of the area you’re cleaning and the amount of traffic coming through your building, to say the least. All of these machines are safe for sealed floors and designed to provide a faster, more efficient and sanitary way to clean flooring. We’ve put together a list of the different types of floor cleaners available and their applications to help you better understand your options.

Floor Scrubbers
There are two types of floor scrubbers: walk-behind and ride-on machines. The scrubbers are either brushes or a large disc that spins at a low RPM, both using water & a soapy solution to scrub residue with an attached squeegee and vacuum system to suck up the dirty solution. ‘Auto-scrubbers’ have two reservoirs for housing clean and dirty water to create an all-in-one cleaning machine. Floor scrubbers are used as a much cleaner alternative to mops and squeegees alone and are used to cover a large area quickly. They do not ‘buff’ floors but rather wash them with a cleaning solution.

Floor Polishers
Floor polishers can also be ride-on or walk-behind. These are not used to scrub floors using soap and water but are for giving hardwood, linoleum, tile and other materials a clean shine after they have been properly washed and dried. Floor polishers always use some type of polish and padded discs to shine flooring, usually at a slightly higher RPM than floor scrubbers. Some floor polishing machines use a squeegee and vacuum system to collect residual dust and dirt but do not wash flooring. Floor polishers provide restorative and protective benefits with the ability to cover large high-traffic areas.

Burnishers
Floor burnishers are powerful machines with an RPM that is much higher than auto scrubbers or floor polishers. These machines are used to give sealed flooring a high-gloss shine that surpasses the abilities of other floor cleaning machines. Like floor polishers, these are only used to apply polish or wax and not used as a floor scrubber. Burnishers are able to cover a much larger area than floor polishers are, and they are perfect for large warehouses, grocery stores or multi-floor businesses. Like auto-scrubbers and floor polishers, these machines come in electric, propane and battery-powered systems.
